fajl

Fajl is the standard term in Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and other South Slavic languages for a digital file. In computing, a fajl is a named collection of data stored on a storage medium such as a hard disk, SSD, USB drive, or cloud storage. It contains information and is identified by a path that specifies its location within a filesystem.

A fajl has metadata managed by the filesystem, including its name, size, type, creation and modification times, and ownership or permissions. The file name often includes an extension that hints at its format or intended application (for example, .txt, .jpg, .pdf). Different operating systems use different permission and access-control models, such as Unix-style permissions or ACLs.

Files are organized within a hierarchy of directories (folders) that provides structure and navigation. The contents of a fajl can be plain text, binary, or structured data (e.g., JSON, XML). File formats define how data is encoded and interpreted by software; some formats are proprietary, others are open standards.

Common operations on a fajl include creating, reading, writing, appending, renaming, moving or copying, and deleting. Applications open fajl for viewing or editing, and many systems support batch operations, backups, synchronization, and encryption to protect content.
