Facultativus, Latin for “optional” or “at one's discretion,” informs a taxonomic or biological context about conditional capability. In modern usage, the term is rendered as facultative and describes traits, organisms, or processes that are not obligatory but occur or function under particular conditions. This contrasts with obligatory or essential attributes, which must occur for survival or reproduction.

In biology, facultative describes flexibility rather than necessity. Facultative organisms can exploit alternative modes depending on the environment. For example, facultative anaerobes can grow in the presence or absence of oxygen, using aerobic respiration when oxygen is available and switching to fermentation or anaerobic pathways otherwise.
