extrasístoles

Extrasístoles are extra heartbeats that occur when the heart's electrical system fires at an unusual time, causing a brief pause before the next regular beat. These premature beats can originate in either the atria (upper chambers) or the ventricles (lower chambers) of the heart. Atrial extrasístoles are often referred to as premature atrial contractions (PACs), while ventricular extrasístoles are known as premature ventricular contractions (PVCs).

Many individuals experience extrasístoles without any underlying heart disease. They can be triggered by various factors, including stress, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and certain medications. In most cases, extrasístoles are benign and do not cause any symptoms. However, some people may feel them as a skipped beat, a fluttering sensation in the chest, or a pounding heart.

In certain situations, frequent or symptomatic extrasístoles might warrant medical investigation to rule out any underlying cardiac conditions. A doctor may perform an electrocardiogram (ECG) or ambulatory monitoring to assess the heart's rhythm. Treatment is usually not necessary for asymptomatic extrasístoles. If they are causing significant discomfort or are associated with other cardiac symptoms, lifestyle modifications or medication may be considered.
