Extradimensions, also known as higher dimensions, are hypothetical spatial dimensions beyond the three we commonly perceive. In physics, particularly in theories like string theory and M-theory, these extra dimensions are often proposed to exist but are thought to be compactified, meaning they are curled up into incredibly small sizes, making them undetectable by our current instruments.

The concept of extradimensions arises from attempts to unify the fundamental forces of nature and to reconcile quantum mechanics with general relativity. If these dimensions exist, they could potentially explain phenomena such as the weakness of gravity compared to other fundamental forces. Particles and energy could be "leaking" into these unseen dimensions, thus reducing their observable effect in our four-dimensional spacetime.

Different theories propose varying numbers of extra dimensions. For instance, some versions of string theory suggest ten or eleven dimensions in total. The geometry and topology of these compactified dimensions are crucial, as they are believed to determine the fundamental properties of particles and forces observed in our universe. While currently theoretical, the search for evidence of extradimensions continues through experiments in particle accelerators and cosmological observations.
