Explantkulttuuri, often translated as "explant culture," refers to the practice of growing plant tissues or cells in a sterile laboratory environment on a nutrient medium. This technique, a subset of plant tissue culture, is widely used in various fields of plant science and horticulture. The fundamental principle involves taking a small piece of plant material, known as an explant, and providing it with the necessary conditions to regenerate into a whole plant or multiply its cells.

The process begins with the careful selection and sterilization of the explant, which can be a leaf segment, stem cutting, root tip, or even a single cell. This explant is then placed on a specific nutrient medium, typically containing sugars, mineral salts, vitamins, and plant hormones like auxins and cytokinins. These hormones play a crucial role in regulating cell division, growth, and differentiation, guiding the explant to develop roots, shoots, or callus (an undifferentiated mass of cells).

Explant culture offers numerous advantages. It allows for rapid propagation of plants, especially those that are difficult to propagate through conventional methods, such as seed or cuttings.
