Origin and scope: The term emerged in UX discourse in the 2010s as researchers sought to value moment-to-moment experience. It is used to complement traditional usability metrics by focusing on emotional engagement, cognitive load, flow, and perceived value during tasks.

Measurement methods: ExperienceWhile can be assessed through mixed methods, including experience sampling methods (ESM), in-context surveys triggered at key moments, diary studies, and, increasingly, passive sensing of physiological indicators. Measures typically address usefulness, ease of use, satisfaction, trust, and arousal.

Applications: It informs feature design, task flows, and onboarding by identifying moments of friction or high engagement. In product testing, ExperienceWhile data help prioritize changes that improve overall experiential quality rather than focusing solely on efficiency or error rates.

Process: Define experience segments (scenarios), establish sampling points, collect self-reports alongside behavioral data, analyze to map experience trajectories, and prioritize interventions that elevate negative moments and reinforce positive ones.
