Evaporiten are a class of sedimentary rocks that form from the evaporation of water. They are characterized by the presence of minerals that precipitate from a supersaturated solution. These minerals typically include salts like halite (rock salt) and gypsum, as well as less common minerals such as sylvite and anhydrite. Evaporite deposits are often found in arid or semi-arid environments where evaporation rates are high, such as ancient lake beds, shallow marine basins, and coastal lagoons. The formation process involves the concentration of dissolved salts in a body of water as water is removed through evaporation. As the concentration increases, minerals begin to crystallize and settle out of the solution, accumulating on the bottom of the basin. Over geological time, these accumulated layers can be buried and lithified, forming distinct evaporite rock formations. Evaporites are economically important, serving as sources of salt, potash (used in fertilizers), gypsum (for plaster and wallboard), and magnesium.
