Evaporatorer is a term sometimes used to refer to evaporators, devices that remove a solvent from a liquid by evaporation to concentrate the remaining solution or to recover the solvent. In English, the standard plural is evaporators; evaporatorer may appear in some languages or as a nonstandard variant. Evaporators are common in food and beverage production, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, desalination, and wastewater treatment.

Principle and operation

An evaporator transfers heat to a liquid, causing part of the liquid to vaporize. The vapor is separated from the liquid and either condensed or recycled, while the concentrated liquid remains. Energy efficiency is enhanced through designs such as multiple effects, where steam used in one stage heats another, or through vapor compression, which recycles latent heat. Some systems operate under reduced pressure (vacuum) to lower boiling temperatures and protect heat-sensitive components.

Types and configurations

Common categories include rising-film and falling-film evaporators, plate evaporators, tubular or shell-and-tube evaporators, and multi-effect configurations. Natural circulation and forced circulation describe how the liquid moves through the system. In addition, vapor-compression evaporators use a compressor to reuse energy, while vacuum evaporators operate at lower pressures to reduce boiling points.

Applications and design considerations

Evaporators concentrate liquids such as milk, fruit juice, sugar solutions, and chemical feeds, or recover water from streams. Design choices depend on feed characteristics (viscosity, solids, tendency to foul or form scales), required capacity, and energy considerations. Materials of construction typically include stainless steels or nickel alloys to resist corrosion and fouling. Cleaning-in-place (CIP) and sanitization are important for hygienic applications.

Maintenance and challenges

Fouling, scaling, corrosion, foaming, and high energy demand are common challenges. Regular maintenance, appropriate material selection, and process optimization are essential for reliable operation and long equipment life.
