Eutrophication is a process that occurs when a body of water becomes overly enriched with nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus. These nutrients act as fertilizers, stimulating excessive growth of algae and other aquatic plants. This rapid proliferation of plant life is often referred to as an algal bloom. As these organisms die and decompose, the bacteria involved in this process consume large amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water. This depletion of oxygen, known as hypoxia or anoxia, can create dead zones where fish and other aquatic animals cannot survive.
