Eutrofioituminen, known in English as eutrophication, is a process where water bodies such as lakes, rivers, and coastal areas experience an excessive enrichment of nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus. This nutrient overload often results from natural runoff or human activities, including agricultural runoff, wastewater discharge, and industrial processes.

The primary consequence of eutrophication is the proliferation of algae and aquatic plants, a phenomenon called algal blooms. These blooms can significantly alter the aquatic ecosystem by reducing light penetration and disrupting the natural balance of species. As algae die and decompose, oxygen levels in the water decrease, leading to hypoxic conditions or dead zones where aquatic life struggles to survive. This decline in oxygen can cause mass die-offs of fish and other aerobic organisms, further destabilizing the ecosystem.

Eutrophication can be classified into natural and cultural types. Natural eutrophication occurs over geological time scales and is a normal part of aquatic ecosystem succession. In contrast, cultural eutrophication results from anthropogenic influences and often occurs at an accelerated rate, causing more severe ecological impacts.

Managing eutrophication involves reducing nutrient inputs through improved wastewater treatment, sustainable agricultural practices, and restoring wetlands that naturally filter nutrients before they enter water bodies. Monitoring and controlling nutrient levels are essential for maintaining water quality and preventing the ecological and economic damages associated with eutrophication.
