eutrofian
Eutrofian is a term used to describe a condition in aquatic ecosystems characterized by an excessive richness of nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus. This overabundance of nutrients stimulates the rapid growth of algae and aquatic plants, a process known as eutrophication. When these organisms die, their decomposition by bacteria consumes large amounts of dissolved oxygen in the water. This depletion of oxygen, or hypoxia, can lead to the suffocation and death of fish and other aquatic life, creating "dead zones."
The primary drivers of eutrofian are often human activities. Agricultural runoff containing fertilizers, wastewater treatment plant
Symptoms of eutrofian include increased turbidity, algal blooms which can give the water a green or brown
