This cellular organization, together with a cytoskeleton and linear chromosomes housed in the nucleus, distinguishes them from prokaryotes. Eukarüootsed range from single-celled protists to multicellular plants, animals, and fungi.

Key features include a high degree of internal compartmentalization, an endomembrane system, and complex gene expression with RNA processing occurring in the nucleus. Cells typically possess multiple linear chromosomes and a variety of organelles that perform specialized functions. The presence of a complex cytoskeleton supports diverse cell shapes and movements, intracellular transport, and development of tissues in multicellular forms.

Diversity and lifestyle vary widely among eukarüootsed. They can be photoautotrophic (such as plants and many algae), heterotrophic (such as animals and most fungi), or mixotrophic. Reproduction commonly involves mitosis for growth and cellular division, with many lineages also undergoing meiosis and fertilization in sexual life cycles.

Evolution and classification: eukarüootsed are believed to have originated through early endosymbiotic events that gave rise to mitochondria and, in photosynthetic lineages, chloroplasts. Current taxonomy places eukarüootsed in the domain Eukaryota, with major clades including Opisthokonta, Archaeplastida, SAR, and Excavata.
