The term derives from Greek ethnos, meaning “people,” and graphein, meaning “to write.” In Romanian, etnografic is the adjective form, while etnografie is the related noun; the concept is widely used in anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies to refer to the descriptive study of people and their ways of life.

Ethnographic work aims to understand social life from the perspective of the people studied, often emphasizing context and cultural meaning over universal generalizations. Ethical considerations include informed consent, confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and attention to potential harms or misrepresentation.

Recent developments include digital or online ethnography, virtual communities, and mobile ethnography, expanding the reach and methods of fieldwork. Across its uses, ethnographic work seeks nuanced understandings of diverse cultures and social practices, presenting them with reflexivity and attention to local meanings rather than external judgments.
