An estância is a large rural estate, most commonly associated with South America, particularly Argentina and Uruguay. Historically, estâncias were vast ranches dedicated primarily to cattle ranching and sheep farming. The term itself derives from the Portuguese and Spanish verb "estar," meaning "to be" or "to stay," suggesting a place of residence and operation.

These large landholdings played a significant role in the economic and social development of these regions. The iconic gaucho, the South American cowboy, is intrinsically linked to the estância lifestyle, tending to the herds and maintaining the vast properties. Over time, many estâncias have evolved. While some continue traditional agricultural practices, others have diversified into tourism, offering visitors a glimpse into rural life, often with activities like horseback riding, sheep shearing demonstrations, and traditional Argentine or Uruguayan barbecues (asados). The architecture of traditional estancias often features a central manor house, corrals, and outbuildings, reflecting their working farm origins.
