Esthetieken is the Dutch term for aesthetics, the branch of philosophy that studies beauty, taste, and the creation and appreciation of art and everyday appearances. It explores how people perceive aesthetic qualities, how judgments of beauty are formed, and how such judgments relate to emotion, meaning, and value. The field covers visual, auditory, literary, and performative art, as well as natural scenes and designed environments.

Historically, aesthetics has roots in ancient philosophy but became a distinct discipline in the modern era, notably through Immanuel Kant’s theory of aesthetic judgment and the concepts of taste, beauty, and the sublime. Earlier empiricists such as Hume argued that taste reflects shared sentiments, while later theorists debated the autonomy of art, the role of intention, and the moral dimensions of aesthetic experience. In the 20th and 21st centuries, aesthetics broadened to include empirical research on perception and emotion and applied areas such as design and architecture.
