Esteröitymismenetelmä, often translated as esterification method, is a chemical process used to produce esters. Esters are organic compounds formed from the reaction of an alcohol with a carboxylic acid. This reaction, known as esterification, typically involves the removal of a water molecule. The general reaction can be represented as RCOOH + R'OH <=> RCOOR' + H2O, where RCOOH is a carboxylic acid and R'OH is an alcohol, forming the ester RCOOR' and water.

Several methods exist for esterification, with Fischer esterification being a common example. This method involves heating a carboxylic acid and an alcohol in the presence of a strong acid catalyst, such as sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid. The reaction is reversible, so to maximize ester yield, water is often removed from the reaction mixture, for instance, by distillation.

Other esterification techniques include transesterification, where an ester reacts with an alcohol to form a different ester and a different alcohol, and the reaction of acyl halides or acid anhydrides with alcohols, which are generally more reactive and proceed under milder conditions, often without the need for a strong acid catalyst.
