Esofagiit is the medical term for inflammation of the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. Esophagitis can be caused by various factors, including infections, allergies, or irritation from stomach acid.

One common cause of esophagitis is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation. This can lead to symptoms such as heartburn, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and a feeling of food getting stuck in the throat. Frequent vomiting can also irritate the esophageal lining and cause inflammation.

Infections, particularly fungal infections like candidiasis (yeast infection), can also cause esophagitis, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems. Viral infections can also be a cause. Allergic reactions to certain foods can trigger eosinophilic esophagitis, where a type of white blood cell called an eosinophil builds up in the esophagus, causing inflammation and damage.

Other potential causes include certain medications that can irritate the esophagus if not taken with enough water, or radiation therapy to the chest area. Treatment for esophagitis depends on the underlying cause. For GERD-related esophagitis, medications to reduce stomach acid production are often prescribed. Antifungal or antiviral medications are used for infectious causes, and allergen avoidance is key for eosinophilic esophagitis. Lifestyle changes, such as dietary adjustments and avoiding triggers, can also be helpful.
