Esitatava is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the fictional family Esitaceae, represented by the species Esitatava viridis. It is native to the montane cloud forests of the island of Nyara in the southern hemisphere.

The genus name Esitatava is derived from Nyaran terms esita meaning leaf and tava meaning light, in reference to the plant’s leaves that appear translucent under certain light.

Esitatava viridis is a herbaceous perennial reaching 40–70 cm in height. Stems are slender; leaves are opposite, ovate to heart-shaped, 4–9 cm long, with translucent patches along the veins. The small tubular flowers are greenish yellow and arranged in terminal panicles; the fruit is a dry capsule.

It grows in cool, humid cloud forests at 1200–2100 m elevation, with rich, often volcanic soils. Pollination is mainly by hawkmoths; seed dispersal occurs through small forest birds. Leaf translucence and high chlorophyll content are thought to maximize photosynthesis under dim understory light.

Esitatava viridis is endemic to Nyara and currently known from three protected forest remnants. The species is listed as Endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation, invasive species, and climate change. Conservation actions include habitat protection, ex situ cultivation, and seed banking.

Taxonomically, Esitatava is monotypic within Esitaceae. In traditional Nyaran culture, the plant’s foliage and fibers are used in handicrafts, and preparations derived from leaves are reported in local medicine. It is occasionally grown in botanical gardens for conservation and education.
