Eructation, commonly known as a burp or belch, is the act of expelling gas from the stomach through the mouth. This gas is typically swallowed air that accumulates in the upper digestive tract. The process involves the relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing gas to rise into the esophagus and then be expelled.

The primary cause of eructation is the ingestion of air during eating or drinking. Habits such as eating too quickly, chewing gum, drinking carbonated beverages, and smoking can increase the amount of air swallowed. Certain medical conditions can also lead to increased eructation, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and gastroparesis.

While eructation is a normal physiological process, excessive or frequent burping can sometimes be a symptom of an underlying digestive issue. The sound of an eructation is produced by the vibration of the esophageal walls as the gas is released. The frequency and volume of burps can vary significantly among individuals and are influenced by diet, eating habits, and physiological factors. In some cultures, eructation is considered impolite, while in others, it may be seen as a sign of satisfaction after a meal.
