Erliegen is a municipality and town in the Central Uplands region of Veridia. It lies beside the Erl River, about 40 kilometers north of the regional capital. The municipality covers 32 square kilometers and includes the urban center and several surrounding villages.

History of Erliegen

Erliegen is first mentioned in historical records from 1129, where it appears as Erleheng. The settlement grew around a fortress and monastic estates, and the present town hall dates to 1904. The arrival of the railway in the late 19th century stimulated population and economic growth.

Population and governance

As of 2023, Erliegen had about 7,200 residents. It is governed by a mayor and a six-member town council elected for five-year terms. The current mayor is Lars Kohn. The municipal administration provides local services, planning, and cultural programming for residents and visitors.

Geography and economy

The landscape comprises rolling hills and forests, with the Erl River providing irrigation and scenic value. The local economy centers on agriculture, including apple orchards and vineyards, along with small-scale manufacturing of wood products. Tourism, drawn by natural features and historic sites, is a growing sector.

Transport and education

Erliegen is served by Erliegen railway station on the Nordbahn line and by regional bus connections. Educational facilities include two primary schools and one secondary school, complemented by a public library.

Culture and landmarks

Notable sites include Saint Kilian’s Church and the town museum. Erliegen hosts an annual Erliegen Festival in August, celebrating local crafts, music, and culinary traditions. Notable figures associated with the town include historic chemist Johann Merten and contemporary writer Mina Scholl, who both have ties to Erliegen.
