eriaikaisia

Eriaikaisia is a Finnish adjective meaning “from or relating to different time periods.” It is used primarily in archaeology, history, and museology to describe objects, sites, or data that originate from or pertain to more than one historical period. The term is formed from eri- (different) and aikainen (time-related). In Finnish grammar, eriaikaisia appears in the plural partitive form, for example eriaikaisia esineitä.

In practice, eriaikaisia is applied when a single artefact, group of artefacts, or a site cannot be confidently assigned to a single period, or when evidence indicates activity across several chronological phases. Researchers address this temporal complexity through dating methods, typology, stratigraphy, and contextual analysis, with the term signaling a cross-temporal interpretation rather than a single-period classification. In publications and museum labels, eriaikaisia items may be described with notes about the periods they relate to or the layers in which they were found.
