Erasing, also known as wiping or sanitizing, involves overwriting the data currently stored on the device. Simple deletion commands in an operating system typically only remove the file system's pointers to the data, leaving the actual data intact and recoverable until new data overwrites it. Secure erasing techniques, however, overwrite the entire storage space with patterns of zeros, ones, or random data, making it significantly more difficult or impossible to recover the original information. Reformatting is the process of creating a new file system on the storage device. A file system is a method by which files are named and organized on the device. Reformatting essentially structures the device to store and retrieve data efficiently according to the chosen file system. Common file systems include NTFS for Windows, HFS+ or APFS for macOS, and ext4 for Linux. Reformatting also prepares the device to accept an operating system installation. It can be performed without a full secure erase, in which case some residual data might remain.
