Epoxyverven are coatings based on epoxy resins designed to protect substrates from corrosion, wear and chemical attack. Most commonly they are two-component systems consisting of a resin and a hardener that cure to a cross-linked polymer network. They can be solvent-based, water-based, or 100% solids (solvent-free).

Application and cure: The two components are mixed just before application. Pot life ranges from tens of minutes to several hours depending on formulation, ambient temperature and humidity. After application, epoxy coatings typically cure from several hours to a few days; full properties may develop over days. They are applied by brush, roller, or spray on steel, concrete, wood, or other substrates. Surface preparation is critical; substrates should be cleaned, degreased and, for steel, blasted to a safe cleanliness level. Concrete often requires moisture control and proper curing conditions.

Performance: Epoxyverven offer high adhesion to properly prepared surfaces, excellent chemical resistance, good hardness and abrasion resistance, and low permeability to water and contaminants. They are widely used for protective coatings on offshore platforms, chemical plants, pipelines, bridges, and for industrial floors and tank linings. They can be pigmented to provide color and UV-stability or used as clear coatings on wood or metal.

Limitations and maintenance: Epoxy coatings can be brittle at low temperatures; UV exposure can cause yellowing and degradation for some formulations unless UV-stable topcoats are used. They cure best in dry, moderate temperatures; moisture during cure can cause defects such as blisters or amine blush. Safety: Resins and hardeners can irritate skin and lungs; adequate ventilation and personal protective equipment are recommended.
