epitheliales

Epitheliales is a term that has appeared in some historical or informal taxonomic treatments as the name of an order within the fungal kingdom. In modern, widely used classifications, epitheliales is not recognized as a valid order, and there is no stable circumscription of taxa that belong to it. Across sources that treated epitheliales as an entity, the included genera and families varied, and there has been no consensus on diagnostic features that define the group.

With the advent of molecular phylogenetics and a consensus-based framework for fungal taxonomy, many taxa once linked to epitheliales have been reassigned to other, better-supported orders. Because of this development, the term epitheliales is largely obsolete in current taxonomy. The lack of a consistent, reproducible circumscription in the pre-molecular literature, combined with modern genetic data, has led researchers to abandon the name in favor of more stable classifications.

In non-taxonomic contexts, epitheliales does not have a standard meaning in biology. The familiar term for cellular layers is epithelia or epithelium; epitheliales is not used to describe tissue types in standard anatomical texts. The resemblance in form to other taxonomic names reflects linguistic derivation rather than a meaningful biological relationship.
