The term is uncommon in modern English; more familiar descriptors include epitaph writer, epitaphist, or memorial poet. In practice, epitaphs may be produced by family members, clergy, stonemasons, or professional writers, and in some contemporary contexts there are services or software that propose or generate epitaph text for inscriptions.

Historically, epitaphs were often carved in stone by skilled craftsmen, with the text sometimes drafted by clerics, poets, or relatives. The work required concision, reverence, and an awareness of cultural and religious conventions.
