Episklerale refers to a condition affecting the episclera, a thin, transparent layer of tissue that covers the white part of the eye, known as the sclera. This layer lies between the conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the front of the eye, and the sclera itself.

Episkleritis is the inflammation of the episclera. It is a benign and self-limiting condition, meaning it typically resolves on its own without causing lasting damage to vision. The most common symptom of episkleritis is redness of the eye. This redness can be diffuse, affecting a larger area, or localized, appearing as a patch. Other symptoms may include mild discomfort, a gritty sensation, or a feeling of irritation, but significant pain or vision changes are uncommon.

The cause of episkleritis is often unknown, but it can sometimes be associated with systemic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or inflammatory bowel disease. It can also be triggered by allergies or minor trauma. Diagnosis is usually made based on a clinical examination by an eye care professional.

Treatment for episkleritis is generally not required as it often resolves spontaneously within a few weeks. If symptoms are bothersome, artificial tears can provide relief. In more persistent or severe cases, topical corticosteroid eye drops may be prescribed to reduce inflammation. Episkleritis is distinct from scleritis, a more serious inflammation of the sclera that can affect vision.
