Epiglottitiscan is a term that appears to be a misspelling or a portmanteau combining "epiglottis" and "itis" which signifies inflammation. The epiglottis is a flap of cartilage located at the base of the tongue, superior to the larynx. Its primary function is to seal off the trachea (windpipe) during eating, preventing food from entering the airway and directing it instead into the esophagus. Inflammation of the epiglottis, known medically as epiglottitis, is a serious condition that can lead to rapid airway obstruction.

Historically, epiglottitis was most commonly caused by the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). However, widespread vaccination against Hib has significantly reduced the incidence of this specific cause in many parts of the world. Other bacteria, viruses, and even fungal infections can also cause epiglottitis. Symptoms typically include a sudden onset of severe sore throat, difficulty swallowing, drooling, fever, and a muffled voice. A characteristic sign, though not always present, is a cherry-red epiglottis visible during a physical examination.

Due to the risk of complete airway closure, epiglottitis is considered a medical emergency. Treatment usually involves immediate hospitalization and administration of antibiotics to combat bacterial infections, along with supportive care to ensure an open airway, which may include intubation or a tracheotomy. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent life-threatening complications.
