An epidural catheter is a thin, flexible tube inserted into the epidural space in the spine. This space is located just outside the dura mater, the membrane that surrounds the spinal cord. The primary purpose of an epidural catheter is to deliver anesthetic medications, pain relievers, or other therapeutic agents directly to the nerves that transmit pain signals.

The insertion procedure is typically performed by a trained anesthesiologist or pain management specialist. After cleaning and sterilizing the skin, a local anesthetic is used to numb the insertion site. A needle is then inserted into the epidural space, and once it is in the correct position, the epidural catheter is threaded through the needle. The needle is then carefully withdrawn, leaving the catheter in place.

Once the catheter is in position, it can be connected to an infusion pump or a continuous drip bag that delivers medication at a controlled rate. Epidural catheters are commonly used for labor pain management, providing anesthesia for surgical procedures, and for managing chronic pain conditions. The medications delivered can numb the nerves in a specific area, effectively blocking pain signals from reaching the brain.

The duration of catheter use varies depending on the patient's condition and the reason for its placement. Once the treatment is complete, the catheter is gently removed. While generally safe, potential risks and side effects can include infection, bleeding, nerve damage, or a drop in blood pressure. Patients are closely monitored during and after the procedure.
