Epätarkkuussuhde, often translated as the uncertainty principle or indeterminacy principle, is a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics. It states that there is a limit to the precision with which certain pairs of physical properties of a particle, known as complementary variables, can be known simultaneously. The most famous example is the relationship between a particle's position and its momentum.

Formulated by Werner Heisenberg in 1927, the epätarkkuussuhde is not a limitation of our measurement instruments but an inherent property of nature at the quantum level. If one attempts to measure the position of a particle with very high precision, its momentum becomes less precisely known, and vice versa.
