Eosinofiilimääriä refers to the count or number of eosinophils in a biological sample, most commonly blood. Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell, or leukocyte, that plays a role in the immune system. They are particularly involved in combating parasitic infections and modulating allergic inflammatory responses. Measuring eosinophil counts is a standard laboratory procedure, often performed as part of a complete blood count (CBC).

An elevated eosinophil count, known as eosinophilia, can indicate a variety of conditions. Allergic reactions are a common cause, including asthma, hay fever, eczema, and drug allergies. Parasitic infections, such as those caused by helminths (worms), also typically lead to increased eosinophils. Other less common causes include certain autoimmune diseases, some types of cancer, and specific skin conditions.

Conversely, a low eosinophil count, known as eosinopenia, is generally less clinically significant than eosinophilia. It can sometimes be associated with conditions like Cushing's syndrome, stress responses, or the use of corticosteroid medications.

The normal range for eosinophil counts can vary slightly between laboratories, but typically falls within a narrow band. Doctors interpret eosinophil counts in conjunction with a patient's symptoms, medical history, and other diagnostic tests to arrive at a diagnosis.
