An envelopedetector is a circuit that extracts the envelope of a radio frequency (RF) signal. The envelope is essentially the contour or outline of the amplitude variations of the modulated signal. Envelopedetectors are commonly used in amplitude modulation (AM) receivers to recover the original audio or data signal.

The simplest form of an envelopedetector is a diode detector. This circuit typically consists of a diode in series with a resistor and a capacitor. The diode rectifies the incoming RF signal, allowing current to flow only in one direction. The capacitor then smooths out the rectified RF pulses, producing a DC voltage that follows the amplitude variations of the original modulated signal. More sophisticated envelopedetectors can be implemented using operational amplifiers or integrated circuits to improve performance, such as increased sensitivity or better linearity. These advanced designs can also compensate for variations in diode characteristics or signal strength. The output of an envelopedetector is a slowly varying voltage that represents the instantaneous amplitude of the RF signal. This output is then typically passed through a low-pass filter to remove any remaining RF components and further smooth the signal before it is amplified and sent to a speaker or other output device.
