Enthärtungsmittel are substances used to reduce the hardness of water. Water hardness is primarily caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium ions. These ions can cause problems such as scale buildup in pipes and appliances, and can affect the effectiveness of soaps and detergents. Enthärtungsmittel work by removing or neutralizing these hardness-causing ions.

Common types of enthärtungsmittel include ion-exchange resins. These are synthetic polymers that have negatively charged sites. When hard water passes through a bed of ion-exchange resin, the positively charged calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the resin and are exchanged for sodium ions, which are less problematic. Once the resin is saturated with hardness ions, it needs to be regenerated, usually by flushing it with a concentrated salt solution.

Other methods of water softening involve chemical precipitation. For example, lime (calcium hydroxide) can be added to water to precipitate out calcium carbonate, reducing hardness. This method is often used in larger-scale water treatment facilities. In some cases, sodium carbonate (soda ash) can also be used to precipitate calcium and magnesium ions.

The choice of enthärtungsmittel depends on various factors, including the degree of hardness, the intended use of the softened water, and economic considerations. While effective in addressing scale and improving soap lathering, some enthärtungsmittel, particularly those based on sodium exchange, can increase the sodium content of the water. This is a consideration for individuals on sodium-restricted diets.
