entendese

Entendese is a form of the Portuguese verb entender used in impersonal or passive constructions to express that something is generally understood or accepted. In normal usage it conveys the sense of “it is understood that” or “one understands that,” as in phrases like “Entende-se que as mudanças são necessárias.”

In standard orthography, the construction is typically written with the clitic pronoun attached to the verb, most commonly as entende-se or entendem-se, depending on the subject. The single-word variant entendese is not regarded as standard in contemporary normative Portuguese and may appear as a typographical variant or in non-standard texts. The form is mainly a feature of formal or written language, including legal, academic, and policy writing, where it introduces a general claim without attributing it to a specific subject.

Grammatically, entende is the present indicative stem of entender, and the addition of se creates an impersonal passive meaning. The construction can be followed by a subordinate clause: “Entende-se que as políticas públicas devem ser avaliadas regularmente.” It functions similarly to other impersonal verbs in Portuguese, such as “diz-se” or “julga-se,” to present widely accepted assumptions or conclusions.
