Energylabor is a conceptual framework used in energy studies to describe the human labor required to develop, operate, and retire energy systems. It covers the full life cycle of energy infrastructures, from field exploration and resource extraction to construction, maintenance, grid operation, and end-of-life decommissioning or recycling.

The concept is typically divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary stages. Primary energylabor includes activities such as mining, drilling, and processing. Secondary energylabor covers manufacturing of turbines, solar cells, pipelines, and other equipment. Tertiary energylabor involves installation, operation, maintenance, and administrative services in energy networks.

Energylabor can be measured with labor intensity metrics, such as labor hours per unit of energy produced or per unit of installed capacity. It is technology-dependent: some renewable technologies may require extensive skilled labor for installation and maintenance, while others rely more on automation; fossil fuel systems often involve large labor inputs in extraction but less in ongoing operation. The concept is used to analyze transitions to low-carbon energy, as policymakers and researchers consider workforce implications, training needs, and just transition concerns.

Critics note that energylabor is not easily standardized and can obscure productivity, automation, and capital costs; it should be used alongside other indicators like energy return on investment and embodied energy. The term emphasizes the social and labor dimensions of energy systems and can inform policy planning, education, and regional development in the context of energy transitions.
