Endosomaalisista is a Finnish term that translates to "endosomal" in English, referring to structures within eukaryotic cells. Endosomes are membrane-bound organelles that are part of the endocytic pathway. They originate from the plasma membrane and are involved in the transport and processing of materials taken into the cell through endocytosis.

The endocytic pathway is a crucial cellular process for nutrient uptake, removal of cellular debris, and internalization of signaling molecules. After materials are engulfed by the plasma membrane to form vesicles, these vesicles fuse with early endosomes. Early endosomes are characterized by their slightly acidic internal pH. Within early endosomes, molecules begin to be sorted. Some are destined for recycling back to the plasma membrane, while others are directed towards later endosomal compartments.

As materials move through the endocytic pathway, vesicles mature into late endosomes. Late endosomes have a more acidic internal environment and contain hydrolytic enzymes. These enzymes are involved in the degradation of internalized materials. From late endosomes, molecules can be transported to lysosomes for further breakdown or sorted for secretion out of the cell.

The endosomal system plays a vital role in cellular homeostasis, signaling, and immunity. Dysfunctions in endosomal trafficking and processing are implicated in various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and infectious diseases.
