Endoplasmallisen is a Finnish adjectival form that describes features related to the endoplasm or, more commonly, to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It is not a distinct organelle; rather, the term appears in scientific Finnish to qualify structures, processes, or phenomena associated with the ER and its surrounding cytoplasmic compartment.

The endoplasmic reticulum is a labyrinthine network of membranous tubules and sacs, continuous with the outer nuclear envelope, located in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. It consists of two major domains: rough ER, studded with ribosomes on its cytosolic surface, and smooth ER, which lacks ribosomes.

Functions of the ER include protein synthesis and processing for secreted, membrane, and organellar proteins within the rough ER, as well as protein folding, quality control, and initial glycosylation. The smooth ER participates in lipid synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and detoxification processes; it also plays a role in calcium storage and homeostasis.

The ER interacts closely with the Golgi apparatus, receiving vesicles that transport newly made proteins and lipids onward through the secretory pathway. It forms membranes that connect with other cellular organelles and participates in lipid exchange and membrane biogenesis. ER stress can occur when misfolded proteins accumulate, triggering the unfolded protein response to restore cellular balance.

Terminology and usage: In Finnish scientific writing, endoplasmallinen is used to describe properties linked to the ER and its surroundings, for example endoplasmallisen retikulumin tehtävät (functions of the endoplasmic reticulum). The term reflects the close functional and structural relationship between the ER and the cytoplasmic interior.
