Endometriózisos is a medical condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium, grows outside the uterus. This tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the outer surface of the uterus, and in rarer cases, on other organs like the intestines or bladder. During the menstrual cycle, this misplaced tissue responds to hormonal changes, bleeding and causing inflammation, pain, and the formation of scar tissue and adhesions.

The exact cause of endometriózisos is not fully understood, but several theories exist, including retrograde menstruation (menstrual blood flowing back into the pelvic cavity), cellular metaplasia (cells changing from one type to another), and immune system dysfunction. Symptoms vary widely among individuals and can include painful menstrual periods, pain during or after sexual intercourse, chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and digestive problems such as bloating, nausea, and constipation, particularly during menstruation.

Diagnosis typically involves a pelvic exam, imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI, and often a laparoscopic surgery to visually confirm the presence of endometrial tissue. Treatment options depend on the severity of symptoms, the extent of the disease, and whether the individual desires future fertility. These can include pain management with over-the-counter or prescription medications, hormonal therapies to suppress menstruation, and surgical interventions to remove endometrial implants and adhesions. Endometriózisos is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management.
