Endocard refers to the inner lining of the heart chambers and valves. It is a thin, smooth membrane composed of endothelial cells. This lining is continuous with the endothelium lining the blood vessels, forming a crucial part of the circulatory system. The endocard's smooth surface facilitates the efficient flow of blood through the heart with minimal friction.

The endocard plays a vital role in heart function. It covers the muscular walls of the atria and ventricles and also forms the delicate leaflets of the heart valves. These valves are essential for ensuring unidirectional blood flow, preventing backflow during the cardiac cycle. The endocard's integrity is critical; damage or inflammation can lead to serious conditions.

Inflammation of the endocard is known as endocarditis. This condition can be caused by infections, most commonly bacterial, but also fungal or viral. Microorganisms can attach to the endocard, particularly on damaged areas of heart valves or on prosthetic valves. This can lead to the formation of vegetations, which are clumps of infectious material and clot. Endocarditis can cause significant damage to the heart valves and can lead to systemic complications. Diagnosis often involves blood cultures and echocardiography. Treatment typically involves antibiotics, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
