Emésztések refers to the processes by which living organisms break down food into simpler substances that can be absorbed and used by the body. This is a fundamental biological function essential for survival, providing energy and nutrients for growth, repair, and maintenance of cellular activities. In most multicellular organisms, digestion is a complex multi-step process involving both mechanical and chemical breakdown.

Mechanical digestion begins with physical actions such as chewing (mastication) in the mouth, which breaks down food into smaller pieces, increasing the surface area for chemical digestion. In animals with more complex digestive systems, churning and mixing within the stomach and intestines further aids this mechanical breakdown. Chemical digestion involves the action of enzymes, which are biological catalysts that break down complex molecules like carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into smaller, absorbable units such as simple sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids. These enzymes are secreted by specialized glands and organs, including salivary glands, the stomach, the pancreas, and the small intestine.

Once broken down, these nutrients are absorbed through the lining of the digestive tract, primarily in the small intestine, and transported to cells throughout the body. Undigested material is eliminated as waste. The efficiency and specific mechanisms of emésztések can vary significantly across different species, reflecting their evolutionary adaptations to diverse diets and environments. Even in single-celled organisms, a form of intracellular digestion occurs where food particles are engulfed and broken down within the cell.
