Emännän is a Finnish term that translates to "hostess" or "mistress of the house." Historically, it referred to the woman who managed the household, including cooking, cleaning, childcare, and overseeing servants if the family was wealthy. The role was central to the functioning of a rural homestead, where the emäntä was responsible for preserving food, making clothes, and ensuring the well-being of the family and farmhands.

In contemporary Finland, the term can still be used to describe the woman who takes primary responsibility for domestic tasks and family management, regardless of her employment status. However, with evolving gender roles and increased female participation in the workforce, the traditional interpretation of the emännän as solely a domestic manager is less prevalent. The word can also be used more broadly to refer to the owner or manager of a farm or establishment, particularly in rural contexts. It carries connotations of competence, care, and authority within the domestic sphere.
