Empiriste is the French term for an empiricist, a person who holds that knowledge primarily derives from sensory experience. Empiricism is a philosophical approach that emphasizes observation, evidence, and experiment as the basis for understanding the world, rather than relying solely on a priori reasoning or inherited doctrine. An empiricist typically maintains that ideas originate in experience and that general theories must be tested against empirical data.

Historically, empiricism arose in early modern Europe as a counterpoint to rationalist systems that elevated reason alone.
