Elvytyssuoja is a protective barrier used during resuscitation to reduce the rescuer’s exposure to a patient’s saliva, secretions and breath when providing ventilation during CPR. The device is intended to be used during mouth-to-mouth ventilation or with a CPR mask or bag-valve mask. It typically consists of a thin plastic or flexible film, sometimes with a built-in one-way valve or membrane, which allows ventilation in one direction while preventing backflow toward the rescuer.

Elvytyssuoja can be disposable or reusable and is commonly sold as a single-use CPR shield or integrated into pocket masks. It is routinely found in first-aid kits, workplaces, schools, and emergency services. The design emphasizes quick deployment and ease of use, enabling a barrier between the rescuer and the patient without requiring extensive equipment.

Effectiveness and limitations should be noted: while elvytyssuoja reduces direct contact with bodily fluids, it does not provide complete protection against infection. It is typically used in combination with gloves and, where appropriate, eye protection and other personal protective equipment. Some guidelines favor hands-only CPR for bystanders to minimize exposure, but barrier devices remain recommended for trained responders who provide rescue breaths.

Disposal and maintenance: single-use devices are discarded after each use. Reusable shields should be cleaned and sterilized according to the manufacturer’s instructions and local regulations. Proper use and adherence to local CPR guidelines are essential for safety and effectiveness.
