Elustamine is the term used in Estonian to describe the process of reviving a person whose breathing and circulation have stopped. The form elustamisel refers to the phase or act of resuscitation, often translated as “in resuscitation” or “during resuscitation.” The concept encompasses both basic life support (BLS) and advanced life support (ALS) procedures aimed at restoring circulation, oxygenation, and, if possible, consciousness.

Basic life support focuses on maintaining blood flow and oxygen delivery through timely chest compressions and ventilation, with the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) when indicated. Advanced life support builds on BLS with airway management, medication, rhythm analysis, and coordinated teamwork in clinical settings or specialized EMS units. Across both levels, the goal is to restore spontaneous circulation and stabilize the patient for definitive care.

In practice, elustamisel relies on rapid recognition of cardiac or respiratory arrest, prompt initiation of life-saving actions, and early access to professional medical assistance. Survival outcomes depend heavily on how quickly and effectively bystanders intervene, the availability of defibrillation, and the quality of subsequent medical care. Training programs in Estonia and many other countries promote bystander CPR and AED use to improve chances of recovery during elustamisel.
