Elmäinen is an extinct species of giant ground sloth that once inhabited Europe. Its name is derived from the Finnish language, translating to "of life" or "living being." Elmäinen was first described by Helve Solari in 1917, but the complete and detailed description was later revised by Hellen Niemi in 1978. It was initially believed to be a single species, but since then it has been categorized and reevaluated, yielding three distinct species.
