Elliptically is the adverbial form of the adjective elliptical. It is used in two main senses: linguistic description and scientific or technical description.

In language and rhetoric, elliptically describes speech or writing that uses ellipsis—omitting words that are understood from context. An elliptically phrased sentence may be concise or indirect, inviting the reader to supply missing information. Originating from the word ellipse, which comes from Greek elleipsis meaning “a leaving out” through Latin and other languages, elliptically follows the standard English derivation pattern adding the -ly suffix to form an adverb. The term thus carries both a geometric sense (shape and motion) and a linguistic sense (omission and indirectness), depending on context.
