An elektronlähte, or electron source, is a device or material that emits electrons. These sources are fundamental components in many electronic and scientific applications, playing a crucial role in phenomena like thermionic emission, field emission, and photoelectric emission.

Thermionic emission occurs when a material is heated to a sufficiently high temperature, causing its electrons to gain enough energy to overcome the work function and escape. This principle is utilized in vacuum tubes, cathode ray tubes, and electron microscopes.

Field emission, on the other hand, relies on a strong electric field to pull electrons out of a material. This method is often employed in electron guns for accelerators and advanced microscopy.

Photoelectric emission is triggered by light. When photons with sufficient energy strike a surface, they can transfer their energy to electrons, enabling them to be emitted. This phenomenon is the basis for photomultiplier tubes and solar cells.

The choice of electron source depends heavily on the specific application's requirements for electron energy, beam current, and spatial coherence. Different materials and geometries are used to optimize performance for tasks ranging from generating X-rays to fabricating nanoscale structures.
