As a result, the species is currently listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore eel populations, including habitat restoration, fishing regulations, and the installation of eel passes to help them bypass obstacles in rivers.

The European eel plays a crucial role in its ecosystem, serving as both predator and prey. It is also culturally and economically significant, particularly in countries like Denmark, Germany, and France, where it has been a traditional food source for centuries. The decline of the European eel highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect not only the species itself but also the broader ecosystems it supports.
