Elektritrafod, also known as electric transformers, are stationary electrical devices that transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. They are a fundamental component of modern electrical power systems, enabling the efficient transmission and distribution of electricity.

The primary function of an elektritrafo is to change the voltage of an alternating current (AC) electrical supply. This is achieved through the use of two or more coils of wire, called windings, which are electrically insulated from each other but are linked by a common magnetic flux. When an AC voltage is applied to one winding, known as the primary winding, it creates a changing magnetic field. This changing magnetic field then induces a voltage in the other winding, the secondary winding.

The ratio of the number of turns in the primary winding to the number of turns in the secondary winding determines the voltage transformation. If the secondary winding has more turns than the primary, the voltage is stepped up, which is essential for transmitting electricity over long distances with minimal power loss. Conversely, if the secondary winding has fewer turns, the voltage is stepped down, making it safe and usable for residential and industrial applications.

Elektritrafod are crucial for the efficient operation of the power grid. Without them, the high voltages required for long-distance transmission would be impractical and dangerous, and the low voltages needed by most appliances would necessitate thicker and more expensive wiring.
