An electrodipstick is a type of liquid level sensor that utilizes electrical principles to determine the fill level within a container. Unlike traditional dipsticks that require manual insertion and visual inspection, electrodipsticks are permanently installed and provide an automated or continuous reading.

The fundamental concept behind most electrodipstick designs involves measuring changes in electrical properties, such as capacitance or resistance, as the liquid level changes. In a capacitive electrodipstick, two conductive electrodes are typically positioned parallel to each other within the container. The liquid acts as a dielectric medium between these electrodes. As the liquid level rises or falls, the capacitance between the electrodes changes proportionally, and this change is measured and converted into a liquid level indication.

Resistive electrodipsticks operate on a similar principle but rely on the electrical resistance of the liquid. A series of electrodes are arranged at different heights, and the sensor detects which electrodes are submerged. The resistance between a reference electrode and the submerged electrodes varies with the liquid level.

Electrodipsticks offer several advantages over manual dipsticks, including increased accuracy, the ability to provide real-time data, and suitability for automated systems. They are commonly found in applications such as automotive fuel tanks, industrial storage vessels, and medical equipment where precise and continuous monitoring of liquid levels is crucial. The choice between capacitive and resistive designs often depends on the type of liquid being measured and environmental factors.
