Eleccions is the Catalan word for elections, the formal process by which a population selects public officials, decides policy through referendums, or both. Elections are a central element of representative democracy and occur at local, regional, and national levels.

A typical election involves eligibility verification, nomination of candidates, campaigning, voting, counting, and certification of results. Most systems guarantee universal suffrage, equal protection, and secret ballots to protect voters’ choices. Elections are often organized by an independent electoral commission or by a ministry of interior, depending on the country.

There are different electoral systems. Majoritarian approaches, such as first-past-the-post, award seats to the candidate with the most votes. Proportional representation allocates seats according to share of votes, often using party lists. Mixed systems combine elements of both. These choices influence party systems and the degree of representation.

Turnout and accessibility are key measures of election legitimacy. Legal frameworks cover voter eligibility, registration, campaign finance, media access, and electoral integrity. International standards and observer missions monitor compliance to deter fraud and irregularities.

Contemporary challenges include misinformation and disinformation, unequal access to voting, gerrymandering, disenfranchisement, and the need to adapt to digital and remote voting while preserving security. Despite variation, elections aim to reflect the will of the people and to provide a peaceful mechanism for political change.
